The typical septic inspection will involve:

  • PUMPING OUT THE TANK - Barring something unusual, your septic tank will be located, excavated, the lid pulled back (as much as practical), pumping the tank out, and photographing the interior in order to document the condition of the tank and inlet/outlet pipes.
  • LOCATING AND INVESTIGATING THE DRAINFIELD - Your drainfield will be located. Once found, the outer limits of the field will be marked out and a small hole dug down to the aggregate bed or absorption chambers. This is to look for the excessive intrusion of roots and the formation of Biomat (a black slime that  can form inside a poorly maintained system which accelerates the eventual failure of the bed).
  • RESEALING THE TANK LID - After pumping and documenting the tank the lid will be put back into place and sealed up as much as possible. It is nearly impossible to make a lid water tight once it's been pulled up. However, this is perfectly normal and not a cause for concern in the vast majority of situations.
  • ASSEMBLING A WRITTEN REPORT OF THE FINDINGS - Soon after the onsite portion of the inspection, I will provide you with a written report of the findings, including short narratives explaining any issues found and detailing any corrective actions recommended.
